Building Societies

The mutual or building society sector’s roots in Yorkshire go back to the very early stages of the movement.

Yorkshire saw its first society, the Hill House Bank Building Club established in 1785 and numbers grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching around almost 100 in Yorkshire by 1875.

The Leeds and Holbeck Permanent Building Society was founded the same year although consolidation and demutualization have reduced numbers over the past few decades but even today 3 of the UK’s top 8 Building Societies are headquartered in the region.
