I returned from annual leave this week to see the most positive business news story for some time – the Trinity retail development to restart in the centre of Leeds. After two years of tower cranes being absent from the Leeds skyline we will finally have something physical happening in the centre of the city. With a two year delivery time let’s hope it provides a confidence boost for other investors and developers.
Meanwhile construction of another type continues apace - even though there is an unclear brief leading to uncertain design work and who knows what kind of structure – only the demolition team seem to have a clear mandate.... The replacement of the RDA with Local Enterprise Partnerships is a hot topic amongst local authorities, business organisations, a few actual businesses and of course Yorkshire Forward. The Leeds City Region partnership of local authorities has already shown its hand and needs to work hard on attracting business engagement. Elsewhere a whole-of-Yorkshire lobby is developing which is undoubtedly business led by Barry Dodds. One thing for certain is that there is a whole lot less money available to provide economic development and business support – and that’s both public and private money.
