Last night was the Mansion House dinner for the FSA, hosted by the Lord Mayor of London for 600 of his closest friends…and great to see Leeds and the city region well represented!
In fact, we were the only region in evidence which is important as we develop the argument for the FSA (or its successors after any change in government…) to look at locating part of its function here in the region. Whilst we would never presume – nor want – to host supervision of international banking, there is a depth and breadth here that would make a natural home for supervision of retail financial areas such as savings and investment, mortgages and insurance.
There is no good reason why this should be in London, and plenty of reasons why it shouldn’t. Unfortunately any move on this is probably stuck in the long grass along with lots of other things until after the next election.
